The video captures a disturbing sequence: A woman can be seen walking along a sidewalk in the Bronx on an early May morning, when a man, his face covered, approaches from behind. The scenes captured on the video sowed fear among many residents of the South Bronx. On Saturday, the police said they had arrested a man — Kashaan Parks, 39, also of the Bronx — in connection with the assault. Parks had been arrested two other times: Once in 2018 for domestic assault, and in 2013 for theft of service in the transit system. The woman, who was not named, went to Lincoln Hospital in the South Bronx after the attack.

Most people think of endangered languages as far-flung or exotic, the opposite of cosmopolitan. All told, there are more endangered languages in and around New York City than have ever existed anywhere else, says Perlin, who has spent 11 years trying to document them. She has published children’s books in Wakhi and other endangered languages of the Pamir mountains in Central Asia. By the start of the pandemic, the city had begun official outreach in nine Indigenous languages and recorded videos in several other endangered languages. We cross-referenced E.L.A.’s New York City language list with three independent databases that track the threat level of languages around the world: Ethnologue, which catalogs all known living languages in the world; UNESCO’s World Atlas of Languages, a survey of all the languages spoken in UNESCO member states; and the Endangered Languages Project, a site to which the public can contribute content, managed by the First Peoples’ Cultural Council and the Endangered Languages Catalogue (ELCat) project at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

America's last functional prison ship, New York's Vernon C. Bain Correctional Center, is closing. The Vernon C. Bain Correctional Center was originally meant to solve overcrowding at Rikers Island. Vernon C. Bain currently houses 500 incarcerated people, though it has 800 beds. Inmates can be seen playing basketball on the Vernon C. Bain court. It's unclear what the future for the Vernon C. The Future of Rap Is Female As their male counterparts turn depressive and paranoid, it’s the women who are having all the fun. In the mid-’80s, the dynamics shifted slightly, when UTFO released “Roxanne, Roxanne,” a comical torch song dissing a woman who rejected the men’s advances. Like good sex, raunchy rap is only fun if all parties are completely enthusiastic, and this music provides necessary female perspectives to match what the men make. In Miami one weekend in late July, Rolling Loud, one of the biggest annual hip-hop festivals, made itself into a microcosm of the rap world. Edward Caban, who grew up in the Bronx as the son of a Puerto Rican transit police detective, on Monday became the first Latino officer to lead the New York Police Department in its 177-year history. Mayor Eric Adams announced the appointment of Mr. Caban, who had been serving as acting police commissioner, in a morning news conference in front of the 40th Precinct in the South Bronx, where Mr. Caban began his career as a police officer in 1991. The move came just over a month after Commissioner Keechant Sewell, the first woman to serve in the role, resigned after only 18 months, frustrated in her attempts to act with autonomy. Mr. Caban, who had previously served as first deputy commissioner, had remained close to the mayor through Commissioner Sewell’s tenure. He will oversee roughly 36,000 officers and 19,000 civilian employees.

North Brother Island is a 22-acre piece of land in New York City that has been abandoned since 1963.
